What: Coffee @ The Commons “Weathering” A Conceptual Approach with Charly Evon Simpson, Playwright
When: Tuesday, March 5th
Time: 10:00 AM
Where: The Commons, Spooner Hall

In this talk, teacher and playwright Charly Evon Simpson discusses how she found herself drawn to writing about the body—and specifically black women’s bodies. Simpson is especially interested to explore how to write about experiences that show the ways that black bodies are viewed and treated differently, in medical situations and beyond. She will discuss her recent play Behind the Sheet as well as newer works that speak to these experiences.

Charly Evon Simpson’s plays include Jump, Behind the Sheet, form of a girl unknown, it’s not a trip it’s a journey, and more. Simpson was recently named the co-recipient of the Dramatists Guild’s Lanford Wilson Award, was nominated for the Outer Critics Circle’s John Gassner Award, and had two of her plays on the 2019 Kilroys List.
