Kansas City artist NedRa Bonds will discuss the healing power of art, especially during her lecture, “Fighting Cancer with Purpose and Giggles.” After being diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer in 2016, Bonds began working on projects that centered the healing power of art, including “The Hands that Healed Me,” a work featuring quilted handprints of the doctors, nurses, and others who provided care during her cancer journey. This lecture is part of “Chronic Conditions,” a year-long seminar series designed to explore the historical, cultural, and structural processes that have given rise to chronic health conditions among Africans, African immigrants, and African-Americans. The series is sponsored by the A.W. Mellon Foundation. If you’re interested in engaging with NedRa Bonds during her visit, or would like additional information, please contact KUSawyerSem@ku.edu.
